Epidemiology
Epidemiology is the study of the patterns, causes, and effects of health and disease conditions in defined populations. It is the cornerstone of public health, and shapes policy decisions and evidence-based practice by identifying risk factors for disease and targets for preventive healthcare. Epidemiologists help with study design, collection, and statistical analysis of data, and interpretation and dissemination of results (including peer review and occasional systematic review). Epidemiology has helped develop methodology used in clinical research, public health studies, and, to a lesser extent, basic research in the biological sciences.
Major areas of epidemiological study include disease etiology, transmission, outbreak investigation, disease surveillance and screening, biomonitoring, and comparisons of treatment effects such as in clinical trials. Epidemiologists rely on other scientific disciplines like biology to better understand disease processes, statistics to make efficient use of the data and draw appropriate conclusions, social sciences to better understand proximate and distal causes, and engineering for exposure assessment.

Biostatistics - Study Types (cross sectional, case control, cohort, case report & case series)
If we want to compare smokers with non-smokers to assess the risk of lung cancer we should use cohort studies, but if we compare lung cancers with healthy individuals and see how smoking is contributing then it is a case-control study. Case control and cohort studies
Case control and cohort studies are examples of epidemiological studies used in public health to understand the relationship between exposures and outcomes. Epidemiology is about the distribution of disease and the causes of disease and the relationship between them. Epidemiological studies can be used to provide evidence for public health and medical interventions. These are examples of observational studies. They differ from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in that there is no deliberate intervention. RCTs are an excellent way of controlling for confounding. If we want to compare smokers with non-smokers to assess the risk of lung cancer we should use cohort studies, but if we compare lung cancers with healthy individuals and see how smoking is contributing then it is a case-control study. Sounds confusing isn't it :/?? Well, not after the coming 5 mins. In this video we will discuss different observational study types, and compare and contrast between them. Enjoy!
Oh, and by the way, regardless whether you use cohort or case-control, smoking definitely increases your risk of getting lung cancer!

Epidemiology
Epidemiology is the study of the patterns, causes, and effects of health and disease conditions in defined populations. It is the cornerstone of public health, and shapes policy decisions and evidence-based practice by identifying risk factors for disease and targets for preventive healthcare. Epidemiologists help with study design, collection, and statistical analysis of data, and interpretation and dissemination of results (including peer review and occasional systematic review). Epidemiology has helped develop methodology used in clinical research, public health studies, and, to a lesser extent, basic research in the biological sciences.
Major areas of epidemiological study include disease etiology, transmission, outbreak investigation, disease surveillance and screening, biomonitoring, and comparisons of treatment effects such as in clinical trials. Epidemiologists rely on other scientific disciplines like biology to better understand disease processes, statistics to make efficient use of the data and draw appropriate conclusions, social sciences to better understand proximate and distal causes, and engineering for exposure assessment.
